I was just about to choose Amazing Spiderman as my pick of the week before I read this book. I’ve said it before, and it’s more true than ever now: Ultimate Spider Man is the most under rated book on the stands. And I said that knowing full well that it is still one of the better selling titles out there!! This book is phenomenal–and it has been for 154 straight issues! Furthermore, this book has been getting exponentially better recently and this issue only served to remind me once again how invested into Ultimate Spider-Man I have become as this Death of Spider-Man arc moves forward.
This is a well hyped event and yes, it uses the “death” of a major hero to draw sales. However, this does not feel forced at all here. In fact, this story appears to be flowing incredibly naturally even though I truly have no idea what is about to happen but I can truly and honestly say that I CARE what happens to these characters.
Hats off to Bendis for this title. As much praise as Ultimate Spider-man has received over the last decade plus–it’s still not nearly enough. This book deserves to be the best selling superhero book on the stands, it’s unquestionably the most consistently fantastic. This issue only serves to make that point once more.
