When the hell is this book supposed to be set?! Sure it’s 8 months after the incident…. but we have 5 issues of Ultimate Avengers now; which I thought was the replacement for Ultimates, and this just does whatever it wants? Most of these characters are either in U.A. or their Ultimatium aftermath is barely resolved, and not even mentioned in this….. I’m guessing this is kinda the prequel to U.A….. it’s gotta be!?

Anywho, the story itself wasn’t entirely bad, if a little continuity confusing. I’m interested in seeing where it goes, but quite frankly I ALMOST didn’t open to the first page after seeing the recap with that god awful Ultimatum art *shudder*, but the Frank Cho stuff on the inside was awesome, despite the disappointing story.

Just wish I knew the timeline of this event, because the groundwork for this is already paling something fierce when compared to the Ultimate Avengers run….. really need Tony in that book to step up, start working with Fury and stick it to his pompous ‘brother’.

I also get how putting the things that are afflicting you into your work in some way can be quite cathartic, but the story about the boy with cancer dragged on a bit. I don’t mean to be insensitive, I know Mr. Loeb lost his son, Sam Loeb; who wrote the ‘most excellent’ issue 25 of Superman/Batman that most of the top artists worked on, to Cancer going on a little over 4? years ago now, but I thought that had been worked out of his writing years ago. When the boy with cancer named ‘Sam’ was mentioned initially at the start of the book, I thought, that’s a nice little touch, but then he’s mentioned several more times, and it started to take me out of the story that I was kinda starting to enjoy; I get the feeling he haven’t seen the last of that Memory, please prove me wrong.

I’ll pick up the next issue, but I’m not sure I’m going to stick around for much after that if the story doesn’t get better.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I’m no fan of jeph Loeb but its a little harsh to expect him to have "worked [his sons death] out of his writing years ago". I cant image such an event is something you could ever forget, or not have influence your life and work in a very direct way for the rest of your life. I think you will be waiting a long time for Loeb to not bring it up in his writing again.

Good review apart from that tho.
