Let’s face facts here: This is not a good comic.

At least it’s not a well written comic. Jason Aaron is not bringing his ‘A’ game to this mini and it is tiring to read an issue. Like in this issue, Aaron is literally stalling for time to get to the next issue. All we see in this is Rogers getting repeatedly tortured in various ways and that’s all we get. We do get a somewhat funny runner that Cap will keep going and barge out of his cell every day. But after seeing it three times in a row it got tiring to see and fast. Now I’m not gonna say ‘filler’ because if I do someone will come to my home and lecture me on why ‘filler’ issues are good. But Aaron literally could’ve made this a three issue mini and we could’ve been done this by now. Hell we’re already back to where we started with Cap about to get killed so the timeframe of this has been speed pretty damn quickly. Also, I know it’s the hot thing to make fun of the U.S. history with torturing but if Aaron is going to make a sly politcial joke about waterboarding, let’s see some creativity then huh? I know that sounds sick but it’s apparent Aaron put that in just for the sake of irony.

Even Garney’s art isn’t much of a saving grace here. Oh it’s quite beautiful as usual and even with a lot of talking heads Garney tries to make this issue visually interesting. But with very flat writing and the fact that Aaron is just stretching for time made this a very disappoint issue to read yet again. At least with Ultimate Thor (before it fell off the tracks with issue 4) Jonathan Hickman seemed to have some complex story to tell. Here it’s just Aaron giving us three issues of Rogers getting his ass kicked by Frank Simpson and he will somehow find a way to beat him next issue. For someone who’s suppose to be an ‘architect’ he sure is not showing his chops this year at Marvel.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I thought this was easily the most interesting issue so far. Most of the time writers hit on the time gone by while Rogers was frozen by having him comment on current clothing styles or being befuddled by an ipod. But Nuke (is that the character’s name here?) “filling him in” on legitimate atrocities perpetrated by the United States is an interesting take. What I found disappointing that that we didn’t see Cap’s reaction, other than ignoring it.  Who knows whether Rogers knows about water-boarding or, rather, the controversy of water-boarding?

But I agree with your overall sentiment that this story seems kind of pointless and could have been much better.

  2. we have a saying in australia – effing boo hoo

  3. His barging out to me represented Cap’s fighting spirit, his unwillingness to give up or to show he’s broken, to be defeated, was a powerful aspect of this comic I felt.

  4. I loved this issue. Not sure what ou’re talking about. I found this to easily be the best of the three. It was emotionally gripping and left you really wanting to see the next issue. 4/5 in my book

  5. @thompsonlive  hey, you stole my line! 😉

  6. @franktiger/thompsonlive: I just found this issue to be really repetitive. I get it, Cap is never going to back down from his country in spite of all this torture. But that’s all this issue was and nothing else was pushed in terms of story.

  7. @Franktiger what can I say I like your style lol

  8. @TNC: Captain america learning about the past mistakes of America didn’t “push” the story even though the story IS captain america learning about the past mistakes of america?

You, my friend, need to learn to think about what you post before you post it

  9. @edward: And you should’ve been banned years ago.

  10. um… effing boo hoo.

Don’t get mad because i pointed out the inconsistancy of your posts. just try to think about what you say
