I think many of us can admit that this week really lacked a clear knock out book. In my review of Final Crisis: Resist (which was the iFanboy POW), I mentioned that the book was really awesome, and that I enjoyed it. But, for some reason, I was hesitant to really name it my POW. It was a strong book to be sure, but I had to wonder if it would have been the pick had it come out last week or the week before. It’s a really strong book on its own merits, but thrown into a different time frame and it may have been overlooked. Now, I only spend the opening of my review talking about FC: Resist because I want to show why it is that Top 10 #2 was my POW.
It’s not secret that Top 10 is one of the best series to be written in the last 10 years or so. And it should come as no surprise that the first series was written by none other than Alan Moore. I mean, an Alan Moore book being good? Who knew right? The quality that was laid out in the first series has carried over into the second, and even though it’s not helmed by Alan Moore himself, I feel safe in saying that it’s good to be back again.
Last issue, which was iFanboy’s POW, was crazy awesome as it immediately brought us back into the world of Top 10. New changes were in store for our characters as the fallout from the ending of the previous series played out. And some of these changes were pretty big. This issue continues the storylines planted by the first, and it’s how all of these weave together which makes this such a strong book. Zander Cannon has found away to get these characters to talk and interact that just seems completely seamless. Storyline thread transitions are so superbly done that often you don’t even notice that you’re jumping from one topic to another. It’s just smooth, and you get sucked into what’s going on with the characters. This issue particularly held some excellent character moments for long time fans of the series, and it’s great to see these changes and how they are affecting the world. These different threads make this book dense, which, in my opinion, makes it an enjoyable read because you are getting your bang for your buck!
Enough can’t be said of Gene Ha’s gorgeous pencils. But beyond that, it’s worth noting that his paneling and pacing of the story are superb. This man knows how to draw comics, and he is somehow able to fit all of this density into the panels and make it work. It takes deft skill to do such a thing, and Ha makes it look easy.
Art: 5 - Excellent
My POW too. The Top Ten crew are like old friends to me. This issue is even better than the first.
I wonder what Moore thinks of this? Not quite as mind-blowing as his stuff, but this is really, really strong.
I’m thinking Moore’s probably ok with it, as he, Cannon and Ha all worked together on the first. If he wasn’t I’m sure he would severing iguana heads and cursing the world.
I don’t know if he’s read the actual comics. So he might hate the art, or the dialog. But Alan did read and enjoy Zander’s series proposal, so he likes the plot!
