I expected Thor: God of Thunder’s twelfth issue would be a light, one-shot cooldown between Jason Aaron’s titanic “Godbomb” story, and the next, no doubt spiraling arc leading into this winter’s motion picture; a brief chance to reposition Thor in the greater marvel universe, let the audience catch our breath, and perhaps showcase a somewhat neglected side cast.

I did not expect the tears.

Issue twelve towers above an already impressive run. It thunders in its many, many, quiet moments, and without once swinging his hammer, Jason Aaron has driven a golden spike into what he has been building on this run. It is beautiful and surprising, and illustrates in all the best ways, how this character fills a special role in this universe.

My misgivings about the art change proved completely unfounded as well. Nic Klein steps in capably and his intense colors and many palette swaps are a perfect complement to the change in scenery from the cold black and hot reds of space and Gorrworld. Should he continue to be a fill in, his art seems it would fit in capably with the style the book has developed.

While this issue is action light, it more than makes up for it in heart, humor, and some dramatic developments in Thor’s Midgard cast. While the development might be seen as a cheap grab for drama, I think it further illustrates a difference that perhaps should be present in a Thor story; he is timeless, many of his side characters however, are not.

I give this a 5/5 for both story and art, and for a fantastically composed Esad Ribic cover. God of Thunder continues to be the gem of my still burgeoning collection and the highlight of my Marvel Now pull list. I loan the whole stack out every chance I get; many times, to someone who has never read anything Thor or even Marvel. In the last year, the creative and editorial teams have artfully crafted a book that should be held up as an achievement of the philosophies behind Marvel Now.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
