I will applaud Marvel with this. They gave Kieron Gillen a big extension on this title. Why? No idea. What’s wrong with Fraction and Ferry run? Who cares? Gillen is able to stay with this series and it’s all for the better. Now we have Doug Braithwaite as artist and you don’t need to tell me anymore to pick up a comic.

It says ‘Seige: Epilogue’ on the banner but let me put this out there. You never have to read Seige to get any of this. Mostly because Gillen sums up Seige with only two pages, but also this has been following the Asgardians during the event for the majority of the time. So don’t worry if you think confusion will be a factor here. Although Gillen has more time to play, he does certainly wrap everything up in a good way. The Warriors Three get back to being the same old buddies, the Thor/Balder relationship is also fixed, and finally the Clor fiasco is resolved. Just a great mix of character moments and some good old fighting. Also one of my favorite moments this week happened with Kelda, although I won’t spoil what it is.

I love Dog Braithwaite. Love his style, love everything about him. Maybe it has to do with the fact that he is so similar to Alex Ross. He can just do a great job of a painted look and also making it look so realistic. Again the first two pages alone look so so good. Backgrounds also look really good as well. Although what hurts the art, somewhat, is the vast amount of colorists. Okay so 3 doesn’t sound ‘vast’, but it does hurt the pencils a bit. Thor in particular looks a bit off and so does Balder. On the whole though, just a gorgeous looking book.

I’m not sure what else Gillen has to go with this series but I’ll be intrigued what else he can do. With Braithwaite staying with the art on this, I’ll be happy to know for the next couple of months….Thor will still be an enjoyable title to read.

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. I thought this was a good read. I agree that you didn’t have to read Siege to get this but this issue tied up several loose ends going back to JMS’s run and even the Civil War.  So if you haven’t read Thor or Civil War then this may not be for you.  I dig the painted style too, somehow it just fits with Thor.  My favorite artist to paint Thor is Esad Ribic. He did an awesome job as artist on the Loki mini. Also the Kelda scene totally made this comic worth it.

  2. Great review – this was my POW. The writing was excellent, but I agree that the art was truly standout. I like this better than Alex Ross – I often find Ross’s work fatiguing to the eyes. Braithwaite’s style is a little softer, perhaps less harsh or severe.

  3. Should also be noted, of the 3 artists who colored this, one was Braithwaite himself (I am guessing the gorgeous opening pages). Not sure why the remaining duties were split though. While coloring is an artform, it is my understanding that good colorists pound out multiple books a month…
