Geoff Johns’ masterful JSA run continues with
the penultimate chapter of “One World, Under Gog”. If you didn’t read last
week’s JSA one-shot “The Kingdom”, you really should before you read this book.
In this issue the tide turns for the giant
creepy benevolent Gog, as on the seventh day of his healing walk across Africa, he now demands worship from those
he has blessed. While Gog’s Herald, Magog,
drops to his knees unquestioningly, the other blessed, mostly younger members
of the JSA are not as quick to submit to Gog’s request. Then in a beautiful 2
page spread, some of the more veteran members of the JSA arrive on scene to
express their displeasure with Gog, and Gog’s JSA disciples.
There are some really cool scenes in this book
including a good majority of the book focusing on Citizen Steel finally
accepting his powers and situation.
But the really great stuff, as with everything
in this arc, is the ties to Kingdom Come and in this book there are some
beauties. First is Jay Garrick taking a
lightning shot from Gog that starts transforming Jay’s body into “pure speed
force”, resembling the Flash from KC, but KC Superman punches the lightning
bolt, deflecting it at Gog, WTF? Next,
is Alan Scott donning the emerald armour of the KC Green Lantern, very cool!
The book ends with all of the granted blessings
being revoked and the JSA returning to the status quo. The final show down with Gog is about to
begin.
