There is really only one thing that you can say about this issue: it’s definitely a great set up to what will probably be a really great project. There isn’t much that’s mind blowing that happens in this issue, but all of the nods to the early days of Marvel are there, and they are awesome. Namor fighting Nazis, the birth of the Human Torch, and Steve Rogers in a movie theater (anyone else catch that?) are all fun Marvel moments present on the page. Again, this issue is pure setup. It sets the stage for where the world is and what’s about to happen, and I think that as all of this unfolds, we’re going to be in for a real treat. This is Brubaker writing WWII era Marvel, and as this issue shows, it’s going to be pretty darn awesome.

I can’t write this review without mentioning how awesome Epting’s pencils are in this issue. His art is so perfect for this project, and it only makes me wish he would have never left Captain America. His pacing is dynamic, the action is fresh, and the emotion of the characters are there. Flip through the pages of the Human Torch breaking from the concrete and tell me you don’t feel his fear. Epting is awesome in this one.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
