With this issue begins the second story arc and Manapul and Buccelato are threading on familiar ground by bringing back Captain Cold, prominent leader of the Rogues. This issue is written in a non-linear narrative and it serve the story well by bringing the clues and the dramatic tension just to the right spot while making the fight between Flash and Captain Cold all the more awesome!

I must confess, I started reading comics only a year ago and I haven’t read Flash comics before starting on John’s run that lead to Flashpoint. So to me, seeing Captain Cold with no guns and cold-based powers is a no-brainer and it works quite well, so much in fact that I wonder what took DC so long for it to make it so in the first place!?

Anyway, the story is basic revenge drama. Captain Cold thinks that Flash is responsible for the imminent death of his sister and is out to kill him in cold-blood if need be. All the while we learn how Barry, Iris and Patty got in the way of the mad Captain Cold and the two women’s lives are literally in the balance if Flash doesn’t intervene in time to save them. It’s fast, it doesn’t pull any punches and it’s adrenalin fueled just like a Flash story should be!

Manapul’s art is, again, icing on the cake. I mean, at this point, I can’t even see people complaining about his art, nothing out there looks like it at the moment and I just love it! The soft color palette supports is clean polished style very well and the way he breaks his panel down to use onomatopeia in them is pure genius!

If you were reticent to try the Flash before, now’s your chance to catch up on the Scarlet Speedster and be in for one heck of a ride!

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. I just recently began reading comics again after a 25 year absence. The Flash was one of the first I picked up and I love it . The Mob Rules storyline was alright but this is much better. Captain Cold’s costume seems lacking but the character is great. I loved the artwork on the first few pages… AMAZING!!!
