Usually, when the first issue of a comic is bad, you can rest assured that the series probably won’t be any good, but “The First X-Men” appears to be a happy exception to the rule. I found issue one of “First X-Men” to be predictable and boring. I wasn’t inclined to buy issue two, but upon skimming it in at the comic shop, I was intrigued, and picked it up. This issue continues the “putting the team together” story, and the team is quite interesting. Holo can create illusions. Nothing new there, but the twist is that she can make people feel the illusions. Yeti is the obligatory big strong guy, but he has a cool look. Bomb is something of a male Boom Boom who breaks out in glowing boils if he doesn’t release his explosive energy. Magneto declines to join, at least for now. I hope he doesn’t, so that the new characters can be explored. A gross, creepy villain is introduced at the end of the story. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these characters make their way into X-Men comics set in the present. Neal Adams is an industry legend, but his art isn’t exactly pretty. Faces are exaggerated, with lips often seeming to protrude. When Sabretooth eats, his big teeth look like they are going to pop out of his mouth. Sometimes figures are not in proper proportion. Adams’ character design, however, is original. Yeti and Virus are impressive.
