Joe Casey seems to be trying his hardest to steal Robert Kirkman’s “most prolific indie comic creator” title right now, but to my taste, he hasn’t quite reached Mr Kirman’s (or even his own usually high) standard.
The characters we are introduced to are one-dimensional, easily forgotten and ill defined. The universe created here suffers from the same issues and unlike Casey’s other recent release; Sex, There is nothing here to hint that this world could lead us anywhere particularly interesting beyond “trippy” visuals.
The art, and in particular the colouring, is of a high standard though. The bounce looks more like Spider-Man than Spider-Man himself has looked in years and something about the composition creates a greater sense of depth than you usually find in 2D medium.
Unfortunately I won’t be sticking around for a second issue to see it again.
