23 pulls including my own… Well fuck it, I’ll do a review anyway for those of us who might want to pick this up as an aftertought.

Christopher Yost, the excellent story coordinator behind Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes season 1 and season 2 as well as one of the legendary writer on the Red Robin series and actual writer of the excellent Scarlet Spider, delves into familiar territory here.

There’s actually two stories and a “Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D. character file on Iron Fist from Ultimate Spider-Man: TAS”.

In the first story our favorite characters and most beloved Avengers from the show are in a showdown with Fin Fang Foom, A.K.A. the big giant fire-breathing dragon that’s currently attacking Stark Tower. Poor Tony Stark, always the center of attention! Well, it turns out that Fin Fang Foom is being controlled by an old foe of Iron Man; The Mandarin! They find a way to defeat him and the dragon turns against him in a pretty gruesome way for an all-ages comic book…

Then, we get some file on Iron Fist from the Ultimate Spider-Man show, it was okay but it felt like it was written for a toddler and you can safely skip it, it doesn’t bring anything new and if you don’t watch the show already, you won’t really care anyways.

And we get the second story, Maria Hill, now Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., accesses Fury’s files on the Avengers and we get a story/re-cap of the high points of the first season, pretty cool for someone who hasn’t watched it, so they’re up to date and can fully enjoy the shows second season or if like me, some details you had totally forgotten happened. Pretty neat in my opinion!

The art by Adam Dekraker is mostly done to mimic the look and feel of the animated show and for the most part, it’s well done. It still feels and look like a comic book though, but the action scenes are grand and epic just like the show, which is great!

All in all I enjoyed this #1 quite a bit, being a huge fan of the tv show, the only drawback though, is that the reader’s hand is being held a little to much for my taste but this being an all-ages book, it’s understandable that you get the accronym for S.H.I.E.L.D. explained about five times… Oh and it was weird that the costumes are the old ones from season 1 and not the new ones from season 2 (mostly Iron Man and Captain America…) but I preferred those over the new ones.

Verdict: if you like the tv show, you’ll like this book for a what it is, pure fun and more action and camaraderie in comic form!

Story: 3 - Good

  1. Dekraker did the art for the recap, iirc.

Chris Jones did the art for the Fin Fang Foom story, I believe.

I would’ve given similar grades, perhaps reversed, but probably 3.75 for both.

I can’t remember right now who did the color, but the color work is really pretty.

    • btw, thanks for the review.

For all the peple who clamor for Marvel to do All-Ages books, very few seem to support them or discuss them when they do. I’m over fifty, but when a good kids comic comes out, I’ll read it. This is that kind of comic book. Fun without being too heavy.

    • Hey there, you’re right about the artists, my memory wasn’t all that good this morning before my first sips of coffee and the art did look similar so I got confused and thought it was the same artist for both stories.

And you got a good point about the all-ages comic books not being supported enough by the community even though a shit load of people on here actually watch and love the show! It’s a shame because it was a fun comic that doesn’t take itself too seriously by having grand ideas or epic concepts, it was just plain and simple, fun!

Anyways, cheers for the reply! 🙂
