I’m 42 years old, and I’ve been reading comics since I was 6 and discovered my older brothers’ comic book stashes in the basement. My two oldest brothers (Who are 12 and 16 years older than I.) both had “THUNDER AGENTS” comics in their collections and I remember reading them, enjoying them, and digging through the boxes of comics to find more. Alas, they only had a few issues. I remember there was a sexy villainess named “Iron Maiden” in the older “THUNDER AGENTS” books. I wonder if we’ll be seeing her in the new DC incarnation? In any case, I’m glad to read that DC has given “THUNDER” a sophisticated revival. Nick Spencer creates complicated characters, and adds texture to the story by bringing in his personal knowledge. Evidently, Spencer is a fan of, or at least has an interest in, the sport of distance running, and he uses that knowledge in this comic. I’m surprised that the THUNDER agency has been kept a division of the United Nations, since the U.N. is now viewed by many people as a mostly feckless and ineffectual debating society. It is certainly difficult to imagine the United Nations having a division that is as aggressive and ruthless as THUNDER. I know SHEILD started out as a United Nations agency, and I believe it was retconned into a branch of the American government. It is a U.S. government agency in the “Iron Man” movies, I believe. I will make a bold prediction here. The current THUNDER AGENTS ain’t gonna die, at least not most of them. Having the powers of the THUNDER AGENTS prove to be deadly to the agents is kind of a stunt that the creative people won’t follow through with. They are not going to invest a lot of effort into trying to create interesting characters just to kill them off quickly.
The art for this comic is quite linear and expressive, which seems to have become the DC house style. The colors are quite bold. The green and blue of Colleen’s and Toby’s eyes, respectively, draw the reader’s attention.

Not that this is the best forum for it, but the UN is a bit more complicated than your description. Parts of it are incredibly ineffectual (the general assembly is the main culprit often discussed), while other divisions — World Health Organization, World Health Fund — are lauded as life savers. The UN is a large complex organization of almost independent working groups, each one needing to be judged on its own merits. Whether in an alternate reality one of those divisions could be THUNDER, I don’t know. Seems a bit mad scientist for the UN, but maybe they were convinced it had to be done to keep up with the Super Hero teams of the big powers…
