With Nick Spencer's star on a very rapid rise I thought this new title would be worth a punt, and it was indeed. This is kind of a bad thing as the last thing I need is another monthly pull, but Thunder Agents has honestly got me kind of hooked and in need of issue two.
This issue is very much an intro and there's still plenty left unsaid. At the same time, Spencer throws us into the action, introducing a couple of apparently back room characters through effective use of a multiple timeline narrative. For those of us who are Thunder novices we learn that Thunder is a government organisation locked in battle with a terrorist (for want of a better word) organisation called Spider. Thunder recruits agents from a pool of folks who have mistakes in their past that they wish to atone for. There's kind of a Rucka's Checkmate vibe here, although with slightly less emphasis on the covert spy shenanigans, but still with plenty of cross-double cross. The characters are interesting and easy to read about and the script is a real joy. I found the story meaty and fulfilling but still a breeze to read. While it's a busy, complex story in a way, everything comes together well and is never confusing. The final page delivers the "punchline" of the concept, which I won't spoil, but it makes me want more.
The art is lovely too. I've seen Cafu before, but couldn't really remember just what his style was. It's got crisp, clean lines with plenty of detail. I guess you could describe it as Cassaday by way of Quitely. He conveys emotion and movement well, complimenting the story really well. Dressed up in a neat Frank Quitely cover and this made for quite the little treat.
Art: 4 - Very Good
