Well, it’s been a couple of great years, but today marks the finish of The Sword.  This has been a really solid series with a blistering pace and amazing twists and turns that compliment the outright brutality of the battle scenes.  While I found this issue be a mighty fine conclusion, I have to admit to being a bit disappointed with how things turned out.  Without going too deeply into spoiler territory, the big fight that seemed destined to happen at the end of last issue, didn’t come to fruition in this issue.  Instead, we were treated to a nice twist involving one of the major characters, but the result is a dialogue laden, action-less sequence that takes up a majority of the issue.  For a series that is constantly on an unstoppable rampage (like the Juggernaut), the pace of this issue sort of sucked the wind out of the sails of the final push of momentum.  That said, the last third of the book, particularly the last few pages are emotional clobberings that stick with you long after you close the book.  Like many of the Luna Brothers other projects, this one will be talked about by comic fans for a long time.

  1. Nice review. I was actually cool with the issue not ending in a big action set piece. The emotional damage was so great, that yet another action scene would have been superfluous.

  2. I agree with @DoctorColossus and I like that it didn’t end in a big battle scene.  I totally didn’t see this coming and I like to be surprised like that.

  3. Maybe when it’s collected this will seem more cohesive.  I’ve just been sitting around for like 2 months waiting for Dara to kick the crap out of the bad guy only to be served with this.  From a story stand point, I appreciate the suprise in the decision they made, but it just felt like a departure from the crushing pace the book had.  Again, this was a really solid ending, but I guess I just wanted a little bit more "bang" with the emotion.
