I've passed the point of being amazed by Sweet Tooth every month; now, after a few months of meh issues, it's simply comfortable. It's a long-term relationship. The time for puppy love is over, and the time for spooning and quiet evenings at home has begun. I wish I could quit you, Sweet Tooth, but I can't -- not even after an issue as simply adequate as this.
With everyone snug and warm in the Evergreen Project bunker, our heroes are pretty content, which means everything's about to go wrong fast. Jepperd and Gus are back on good terms again, the hybrid kids are playing around in the greenhouse and, for now, their new benefactor Walter's latent creepiness has yet to fully assert itself. Then Jepperd and Gus go have a heart-to-heart in the woods and, out of nowhere, Gus gets shot through the gut -- a twist that would be so much more exciting if the cover didn't totally spoil it.
It seems as if Sweet Tooth's falling into the Walking Dead cycle of bleak survivalist despair, fleeting hope and sudden crisis. Not that I mind that. It's still consistently good. Let's just hope that when the next gut-punch moment comes along, it actually feels like it.
