Is there anything Jeff Lemire can’t do with this book? It’s a question I asked myself while reading this today. Because let’s face it, almost every issue is different in terms of the art. I can’t think of a time when two issues looked the same with this series. It’s no different with this issue as Lemire wants to waste no pages telling us two completely different stories.

On the top of each page we have Gus and Jepperd trying to fight a bear. On the bottom of the page we have Walter (finally we see a name!) explaining how he got to ‘Project Evergreen’ with the girls. I wanted to say half and half there for each page but Lemire puts a bit more space of the Gus/Jepperd story in this thent he girls. It doesn’t detract from the interesting, and I also call ‘bullshit’ story that Walter gives. But it’s hard to focus sometimes when we have this huge-ass bear fight on top of it.

Seriously, I’m not sure if Lemire has fought a bear before, but I’ll believe it now after reading this. Everything about that entire sequence had my attention from beginning to end. The size of the bear is handled really well and it just feels big the way Lemire draws it. But what I love most about that portion of the issue is that Lemire is still experimenting with this experiment. Tiny panels flutter throughout the sequence, like Jepperd falling unconcious or tiny squares go as thought balloons when they think of something. There’s even a nice moment where we see the POV of the bear and how it brings more questions into what Gus actually is. But that doesn’t excuse the bottom portion of the issue. No, we got a lot of detail in those panels. I mean Lemire is able to make a convincing dam and control room in the tiniest of panels. How he doesn’t go blind from all that detail I’m not sure.

Before this comic came out, I had a very hard time praising art. I still do actually, but not when it comes to this comic (and also Chew). Because Lemire is able to bring so much to the table issue after issue that it never gets tiring to praise the art. There is so much going on in this particular issue that several reads are required to really appreciate this. On paper though (pun), you have an interesting origin story for a character and an entertaining fight with a bear. How could this not be my pick of the week based on that bear fight alone?
