Jeff Lemire seems to know the perfect time to change the rules of a comic with each issue. This month we have a ‘horizontal’ read on our hands and it really breaths in a lot of ‘originality’ to this series. Yes, horizontal comics have been done before (like in Morrison’s New X-Men run) but I don’t think it has been done in a while. So having this new take on the series at our hands, just how much more original can this be?

Right off the bat, Lemire brings a children’s book vibe to this thing. A Golden Books experience if you will. At times, the top page of the issue has just a single image that is referred to in the text filled page below. Other times there are pages with just panels like a regular comic, but it also reminds me of children books that would use that type of visual to just showcase one character talking. Of course within these pages and panels you get some pretty adult things going on; like Lucy about to slit Dr. Singh’s throat. Even though you would assume that this is just a ‘special’ issue, there is some great characterization here. Gus’s and Jepperd’s relationship is explored and Gus is also quickly turning into an adult before our eyes. The only real disappointing thing about this was the ads in this. I know you need to have ads in comics now, but their placement did ruin some of the pacing of the issue.

Bad ad placement aside, this was a great issue to read. The horizontal reading might have been a gimmick but Lemire plays it up beautifully and really adds a lot of characterization in this issue. There is also a child-like feeling with this issue even though the point of this seems to be that Gus is going to grow up into an adult. It’s experiments like this that really makes Sweet Tooth stand out from the rest of  comics today.
