Jeff Lemire is a comic creator I have never read before. Everyone praises on his earlier work, notably the Essex County Trilogy, but I haven’t gotten around to reading it. But now Lemire is doing a new ongoing series for Vertigo, and it’s first issue is another $1 debut. Will this be any better then the other two series Vertigo has advertised?

Now I am a big fan of ‘The Road’ and other tales of the apocalypse. It’s probably the dark heart I have, but those can be my favorite stories if written well. It’s only one issue and really nothing is explained. But if Lemire can keep this pace up, I will be one happy reader. This was a fantastic first issue of a series. Totally worth the dollar I spent. It’s such a bizarre idea though, like why does this kid look like a deer? What happened to Earth and is it really going to hell? This series has a ton of questions and I want them answered. But in a way where I can appreciate the story.

Everything about this comic was fantastic. It’s setting up a nice, hopefully long story where obviously there’s more then meets the eye. I didn’t think I would like this main character, I mean the cover is pretty freaky. But this is an interesting kid other then just his deformity. Just an innocent kid living with a father that is dying. That whole sequence where he slowly dies is just heartbreaking. Also freaky at the same time; in fact this could be a very good horror comic if Lemire plays it right. Plus I love his artwork in this, it’s absolutely stunning. The characters themselves look pretty standard for the most part. But the backgrounds seem to be the main feature of the book. That has to be the case because some of these forest shots are like a painting at points. The two page spread where the dad is dying and he showcases the forest from winter to spring. Stunning.

I can’t wait for the next issue of this. Unwritten and Greek Street have failed to keep my interest. But this idea of doing first issues for a dollar is a great idea. Would I have given this series a try if it was regular price? Probably not. But because of the price tag and of the originality of this story, I am hooked for this as long as it stays out. This could be like ‘Walking Dead’ but with an animal twist to it.
