This issue was light on “plot” and “action” but HEAVY on mood, mood, mood. I love Francavilla’s covers for Lone Ranger and his run on the pre-reboot Detective Comics–and he might be my new favorite Swamp Thing artist. I thought Paquette had that title forever.

Francavilla’s style is a far cry from Paquette’s work…heavier/grittier vs. lush/almost-baroque detail..but it damn sure works. Excellent creative decision to bring him on for the new arc.

Coming off the previous arc which ended with the big “battle scene,” this first piece in the new arc was darn near perfect. The book now has someplace to go again… emotionally, in intensity etc.

Snyder’s script for this issue is quite meager in words, but the marriage with Francavilla’s art creates a beautiful, scary, tense piece.

Almost my POTW, but THAT much.

If you love Comic Book Excellence, you must be reading Swamp Thing.

Story: 4 - Very Good
