It’s incredibly difficult to write an engaging satirical look at superheroes. I can’t think of a single mainstream superhero who hasn’t been skewered in multiple parodies. And the tropes used in this book are far too easy. A Batman character who has sex with his sidekick? A Superman driven mad by the fact that he can hear everyone’s cries for help? Ugh.

The concept of seeing all this through the eyes of the “Real Housewives” (cringe) of the superheroes could be interesting, but I can’t think of a single interesting thing about the female characters who should be the most important part of this story.

It’s a shame because Russell Dauterman’s art is superb. It takes a lot to get me to notice minute details, but I came away from his art noticing noses. Rarely does an artist have more than one type of nose they draw. But each character here has their own body and face design which stands in contrast with the mostly flat personalities of the characters.

It doesn’t appear that a lot of people were looking forward to this/planning on picking it up, anyway. But if you were, I might give it a flip through in the book store before commiting to buy it.

  1. Kind of interested in picking this up given the early advance buzz on this book, but my shop only ordered very few copies which were snagged quickly

    • We have a relatively small amount of people who buy new comics off the shelf from us (about 40% of our business is subscribers and another 45% are trades/graphic novels), so we only got about four copies. We still have four copies of it on the shelf. So, if you’re in Boston, MA…..
