The title of this issue is “From a Cub to a Wolf” but what it really should have been called was “Jimmy Olsen man’s up and grows a pair of balls.” With this issue, Robinson is at his finest crafting a story around a mystery that relates to his first arc on the the Superman title proper. And it’s an interesting mystery at that, with multiple layers that constantly need to be peeled away to get at the underlying truth about what’s going to happen to Superman in the coming years. And what Robinson does best in this issue is that he gives Jimmy Olsen meaning. He makes him more than some bumbling teenage kid that says “Gee willickers” and “Golly gosh darn.” This is a story of man on a mission. A man whose desire for truth outweighs his terror, whose desire to not fail drives his feet forward when his brain tells him to turn away. It’s an interesting take on the character, and it’s one that I really enjoyed. Now, I’m sure it’s not here to stay, but it does play well to the whole “Jimmy Olsen will be the greatest reporter ever…sometime in the future” schtick that DC has been kicking around for the past few years. Lastly, I want to note that this is a monster book filled with tons of story. It’s well worth the price of admission, and if you’re at all interested in the “New Krypton” storyline that’s coming, it’s to your benefit to check this issue out.

A comic book review is not complete without discussing the art, and for me, the art was hit or miss. This was a team effort with three different pencillers taking on drawing duties. For the most part the art does a serviceable job and carries the story nicely. There are moments where the art really shines, like with some nice splash page or an excellent pace to the storytelling. In no way did the art get in the way of the story, and all of the artists found a clever way to compress the story without taking away from it. But I’m left with no real major feeling one way or the other with the art, and as I read it, there were things that I went “Ooo…” to and things that I went “Eww…” to.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
