Before today I felt that John Byrne’s Man of Steel was the definitive origin story of the modern (or Post-Crisis) version of Superman. Today, though, I read Superman: Secret Origin #1 by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank.  Johns and Frank prove to be an incredible team once again, but this time they’ve really outdone themselves.  Every note is pitch-perfect, from Johns’ characterizations–particularly the Kents just doing their best to be parents to such an incredible child–to moments of Clark discovering new abilities and the necessity to hide them, and Gary Frank’s Brando-esque depiction of Jor-El,  and his actually having drawn all of these extremely recognizable characters as believable teenagers.  This is easily the best Superman book I’ve read since All-Star.  I cannot wait for the next issue.
