Where is my Superman and what have you done with him? . . The rap on Superman is that he is incredibly difficult to do anything meaningful with since he has the power of a god with the heart of a Kansas farm-boy. So the temptation is always to do something off-kilter with him. Remember the rumors of the Tim Burton/Nick Cage Superman-As-Alien film? . . That justification might be easier to buy if we hadn't just had years of excellent Superman stories from Johns, Rucka and Robinson. However for presumably commercial reasons, DC has given the comic to JMS, who I will admit is not my favorite writer, and until Loeb began to redeem himself recently, sat firmly with that writer in the "Couldn't Be More Over-Rated" Camp. The fundamental idea is good, and has been well-covered in the comics press. Like Forest Gump, Superman will walk the US, attempting to reconnect with humanity, ours and his own presumably. While he walks the earth he will continue to do good in certain ways, from destroying drug caches to cleaning up storerooms. He will also use his power to bully an irritating reporter who resembles any number of bloggers, and apparently agree to let a young woman potentially end her own life. Yup. The art is just fine. Some nice use of light. However this seems for all the world like JMS has confused Superman with his Hyperion. Ugh.
