Four parts into the "World without Superman" storyline and it seems clear that each superbook will have its own story to tell. Unlike the other titles, which are more character focused, Superman appears to put Metropolis in the spotlight. This certainly plays to James Robinson's strengths, who's writing in Starman turned Opal City into one of the DC Universe's most actualized and popular locales.
"Yesterday and Tomorrow" sets up a Metropolis without Supes running the heroes game. Before heading off for New Krypton Superman recruits Steel, Mon-El, the Guardian, and the Science Police to carry his cape while he's away.
Can these three get along and continue the battle for truth, justice, and the American way? Yeah, probably but that's not really the point. This has to be about Metropolis. If not, this will be the caboose of the supertrain. I have to believe that it won't be based on Renato Guedes' staggering cityscapes. Where Tony Harris' art in Starman showcased the shadowy streets of an old world ornate Opal City, Guedes' Metropolis towers big and bright.
I'd say it's a great jumping on point for Superman fans except there's no Superman. But if you like James Robinson you ought to be reading this.
