I’m back bitches!!

Alright now that its out of my system.  Time for my first review since my hiatus.  I must say that this book was a little disappointing for me.  Let me start with the story.  I will be the first to admit I have not read as much about Supergirl as I would have liked to, I did just pick up the trade of Candor, which I hope to read soon.  So a lot of this story was alien to me.  I know of some of what has happened in Supergirl, but not all of it.  To me it really seemed like the writers wanted to take some of the stuff that to me didn’t make sense about Supergirl and rewrite what has happened in her past.  I’m completely okay with this since from what I did know, I wasn’t keen on.  The crystals coming out of her body and the cliche Mom and Dad are evil thing didn’t set well with me.  So fixing these things made me happy and I’m more excited about Supergirl.

So you may be asking why I gave this book such a low rating.  More importantly to me is that this was a New Krypton story, which I felt hasn’t been able to keep up the pace since about 6 pages into the first one shot.  I like the one about the Guardian mostly because of my attachment to the character from the Death of Superman arc, but that’s about all I’ve liked of this series so far and this issue felt like fluff to get ready for the next issue.  It felt like the writers weren’t sure where to go next and decided to fill it in with some rewrites of Supergirl’s background.

Which to me is getting old for all of the Supergirls.  Make an origin and stick with it damn it!  Have we not learned out lesson from Powergirl in the past?  I’m hoping with the way it was rewritten here that I can say yes we have.  Although DC can prove me wrong and could introduce Atlanteans again.

As for the art in this issue I felt it was okay.  Felt old school which I can definitely appreciate.  It’s hard for me to rate this high as I am now attached to Gary Frank’s artwork for everything Superman.  I felt that his Supergirl in the last issue of the Brainiac art was fantastic.  So i feel bad for the artistic team on this book because they now have to compete with him along with anyone else in the New Krypton arc.

Overall I gave this issue a 2 out of 5.  The art was okay and the plot was a little upsetting as it was filler and didn’t really move along the New Krypton story and its real purpose was to clean up some of the Supergirl continuity, which is sad being as we are on issue 35.

I’m still holding out on New Krypton, because I have faith in the fact that in the end with all of these great writers attached I’ll put down the last issue and remember why I loved Superman as a kid.

If anyone disagrees with my review, as always I love to hear your thoughts.  Tell me what you think.

  1. You say negative thoughts in such a weird way….whats the word?….oh yeah: in a calm manner :)

You must teach me to be ‘calm’.

Start off by reading the Toa of Pooh and then the Tao Te Ching.  The Toa of Pooh will help you understand, the Toa Te Ching will help you be calm.

Or you could just read a bunch of deep thoughts by Jack Handey.  Also you must not have read any of my talks on the forums about Morrison and Moore.  They’re mostly filled with rage and crying.

  3. Any thoughts on who the mysterious superwoman is at the end of this story? It doesn’t sound like many people care. I can understand the jaded reactons to more filler and back story, once again genuine creativity held back by character/DCU archaeology. So is that the new Supergirl disguise? Despite her confusion on which direction to take, now that her parents have saved her from the Kryptonite poisoning, or is it one of those thousands of Kryptonians wanting a shot at the title?

Yeah I mostly did not care at the end of this story about the possibility of a new Supergirl.  My bet is that it’s her friend that is now her parent’s head of security.  My guess is after the sass she gave her about earning the position, she now thinks that she’s going to "earn" the title of Supergirl.
