To say Supergirl is the best of the Super-books isn’t saying much. Besides the occasional great Action Comics issue, Superman et al haven’t been handled well in the new 52 at all. This crossover, H’El on Earth, is a reflection of this. But where we gain less sympathy for Superman and Superboy each time we see them, Mike Johnson’s take on Kara Zor-El gets to the core of the character and makes her really compelling. Showing her as both a powerful and good being capable of helping others as well as a frightened teenager that just wants to go home, Johnson has made Supergirl into a character that feels like she’s on an arc. This is in opposition to the other members of the Superman family that feel like blank slates. There are problems galore with the crossover as a whole but the Supergirl portions have felt fresh and engaging. Its almost enough to make you want to see how the entire storyline ends.
