This entry into the H'EL ON EARTH crossover works pretty well on its own. Though it follows directly from the events of SUPERMAN #13, there's enough recapping to get you through without boring people who read that issue (like me); and though the events of SUPERBOY #14 are, presumably, significant, and the titular character of that series makes an appearance, it won't leave people who haven't read that issue (like me) in the dark on some important point.
This still feels like a SUPERGIRL issue well enough, if a little denser than usual. Kara is still trying to figure out where she fits in relation to her cousin and his clone, and the world; and H'el, the Kryptonian survivor, seems to only complicate things. We have yet to see him interact directly with Superman, but he clearly doesn't care for Superboy, but he seems to appreciate Kara the most as an untainted daughter of Krypton.
His agenda, of course, seems sinister, not so much because of anything he does in particular as the fact that we've seen this trope before, the at-first-friendly stranger whose worldview diverges somewhat from that of our heroes, and who will eventually become a villain through some plot twist. No one will be surprised by this.
Still, I enjoyed this and the potential it suggests for the later issues of the crossover. I'm eager to see more between Kara and Kal with or without H'el's involvement, and a Kryptonian throwdown sounds mighty appealing to me. There are no guarantees, but I think we can all tell that's where this is headed.
