For a book called Superboy, Connor Kent sure has been pushed to the sidelines in the climax of his own story. In two issues -- the last of which was 90 per cent flashbacks -- this title has transformed itself into a Phantom Stranger book featuring Superboy. This issue neatly wraps up the Hollow Men story at a breakneck pace, with at most two pages of Superboy action. Even Simon Valentine and Psion get more screen time.
The story is rushed, the art seems kind of rushed, and the series feels like the first season of a TV show that never got greenlit for a second. We've spent a long time on this Hollow Men story and haven't scratched the surface of Psion's long-foreshadowed betrayal, or Simon's relationship with Superboy, or Superboy's relationship with Lori.
Superboy #1 was so full of promise, and there are nice touches in this issue that remind us of that -- the Karl Kerschl cover references the #1 cover by Rafael Albuquerque, that kid in the cape is running through the field again, and we get to see Superboy on that water tower one last time. At least they're getting a good look at Jeff Lemire's Smallville; would that the rest of us could see it too.
