On a initial read this struck me as disappointing. But like all of Whedon’s work, it just needs a little room for it to develop with you as a reader/watcher. All of the characters are great, the art is perfect for the story with little easter eggs littered about, and there’s a lot of jokes that just need repeating. Very fun.
