Anthologies are a dangerous beast. Whether it's in issue or in trade form you can never say "I enjoyed all of these stories". There's always one or two in the bunch that are downright bad. When I saw this at my LCS I was intrigued to pick it up. Not just because it's a Marvel Knights titles but because of the lack of creators I know. Other then Paul Pope, no one advertised in the solicts I knew. It's more of an experiment really, but my brain was just telling me to pick it up. I'm gald I listened to my brain for once....you know why? Cause this is hands down my pick of the week.
Yes an anthology title is my pick. Which could mean only one thing: All of the stories in here were perfect. Not a single bad idea in this and it was executed perfectly. Normally, other then Wednesday Comics, I don't like to talk about everything about it. But this is just too good to pass up. I need to explain why each story was great to read.
Lo, a Watcher!: (Nick Bertozzi) Very strange introduction to the comic. Seeing a watcher spy on She-Hulk is dirty but hilarious at the same time.
Inhumans: (Paul Pope) This is more of a Lockjaw tale then anything else. Normally I am not a fan of Pope's art, but this looked really good. He definitely researched on how a pitbull acts. It's kinda like the Tiny Titans story where the Super-pets are trying to eat. But still this was a good start to the anthology.
Walters-Jameson Wedding: (John Leavitt/Molly Crabapple) This is like a more classical setting to what went down during the wedding. Walters goes insane and turns into She-Hulk while John Jameson is happy on how it turned out. Love the art by Crabapple which is very detailed but very surreal at the same time.
Welcome to Spider-Town: (Junko Mizuno) A Japanese short where Spider-Man and MJ moves into a town full of Spider people. It's such a cute looking comicĀ and I love the designs for chibi-Spiderman and chibi-MJ. Plus you have the greatest cameo by Stan Lee ever.
Dr. Strange vs Nightmare: (Dash Shaw) Very very strange story about Dr. Strange. Him getting sucked into Nightmare's universe was hilarious. When a soup is telling you 'Nightmare did not poison this'....then Nightmare did poison your soup. Also his battle with a yawn was hilarious as well. Great colors used by Shaw; very surreal and kinda reminds me of a Nickelodeon magazine cartoon.
Hulk Smash Squad: (James Kochalka) Sort of a variation on the Hulk cartoons you'll see sometimes as a back up feature. Drawn to look like a kid drew it, it very much feels like how a kid would do a comic book. Just love how Red Hulk is always angry, Blue is just dumb, and white is passive agressive.
Marvel's Most Embarrassing Moments: (Johnny Ryan) Very reminiscient of a Mad Magazine parody; this is just a collection of very funny panels showing embarrassing moments. Like Nightcrawler trying (and failing) to flip the bird. Rhinos falling in love with Rhino. Or Cyclops peeping in the girls locker. If it wasn't for the next couple of stories this would be the best.
The Punisher in "Scared Smart": (Johnny Ryan) Seeing Punisher scare a kid straight into better grades is hilarious. So he just pointed a gun at him for the next 10 years? Plus I love how Ryan draws his anger, it's so funny to look at.
Namor the Sub-Mariner in "Fed Up with Man": (Kupperman Production) Namor is angry at barrels and a dog...why? Plus him acknowledging that humans make delicious pizza's was hilarious.
The Incorrigible Hulk: (P. Bagge) Definitely a homage to Mad Magazine parodies. Just seeing Hulk telling kids to not smoke cause 'Tobacco is Wacko' and other one-liners was great. This is going to continue in the next issue so more laughs are in store.
And Call My Lover MODOK: (Nick Bertozzi) Such a disturbing tale about how one agent of AIM (a female) made MODOK happy through out the years. Iron Man pretty much said it all at the end; 'Wow. That's weird'.
The Green Menace/The Blue Hair: (Perry Bible Fellowship) Just two quick jokes about Hulk and Wolverine. Definitely provides a chuckle; especially the panel of Wolverine killing Beast.
Barfight: (Jason) This where I thought "Goddamn this is pick of the week". I mentioned it earlier in the week with my 'Low Moon' review but....Jason is one of my favorite comic creators. His simple style is unqiue and he has such a great sense of humor. Seeing the characters as the style of dogs Jason ususally uses in stories was great. The story just being about Parker trying to get into a barfight was hilarious. He convinced Doc Ock to go into a bar and he just spilled beer on him. The final panel with Ock crying in a psychitrist office was great. I hope he does another one next issue. But this shows why I love this guy more then anything.
So yes, every single story in this was amazing to read. Great art as well and most of these were done by one person. Just shows the wealth of talent the comic book industry has. I never though about getting this book until about 3 hours ago. But I cannot wait for the second issue of this. If it's anything like this issue, this could be the greatest anthology Marvel has ever produced.
Art: 5 - Excellent
Not being much of a Marvel guy, I didn’t even know this book existed. I’m glad to hear you liked it so much. Thank you for the detailed review. I may check this out if my shop actually has any copies.
If your shop has it definitely check it. I have favorites but there is no bad story in the bunch.
