This was one of my highly anticipated books of the DC relaunch. As a huge Stormwatch and Authority fan since both started, I’ve been very excited to see how this would pan out. Cornell’s become one of my favorite writers, and the story is intriguing. There is a lot going on – multiple threads that I assume will merge as it progresses. There are characters we’ve seen in new contexts, and totally new characters as well. This very much reminded me of something Warren Ellis would write – you kind of get thrown into the story and have to accept the status quo without asking too much up front. Let the story unfold and answer your questions as it goes. Lots of potential here. However, I found the art to be very inconsistent. Some panels were amazing, and some were just average. Not sure if that is Sepulveda’s style, or if he’s just in a hurry like everyone else at DC must be. This book deserves better, more consistent art. I’ll definitely be back for the foreseeable future, but the art needs to improve to the quality of the writing.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Oh, my one complaint I forgot to mention is that this could be treading on a central idea of Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. series by Hickman. I could be wrong, but we’ll have to see how it pans out.

  2. Oh, and I gave the art a 3, not a 5 (I know, it’s on the bug list!).
