In this issue, we get more of a macro view of Hine & Braithwaite's universe. The first issue introduced us to a team tasked with solving a mystery on an inhospitable planet. While we got a sense of the inhabitants and climate of Amaranth, it was through a fairly intimate lens. In this second issue, we get to see much more of the culture, politics and prejudices on Amaranth and we get hints that a much deeper conspiracy is in play than originally hinted at in the debut issue. In a fun, extended Mos Eisley-esque sequence, Hine takes a deeper look at the indigenous species, the local drug trade and how law enforcement seems content to pick their battles based on simply preserving the careful balance of the established order. Soon, one of the team members is approached by a prostitute, who later turns out to be under control by the consciousness of an unknown party; a party using outlawed technology to gather classified information regarding the team’s investigation. This raises the stakes quite a bit. This is just damn fine world-building as far as I’m concerned, on par with some of Abnett and Lanning's better efforts, I would say. I would highly recommended Storm Dogs to fans of DnA or anyone who would appreciate the injection of a little mystery into a fully realized science fiction environment.
