this star wars tale takes place around 20 years before the rebels blew up the original death star. shortly after order 66 was issued and vader put into his black clad armor.
the story is focused on a jedi named dass jennir and his allies, the crew of the tramp freighter uhumele. a jedi branded as an outlaw by the empire.
dass has crash landed on a desert planet called prine along with his droid H2 and a female passenger named ember to whom he has promised safe passage home.
ember gets kidnapped by desert pirates and dass fails in his rescue attempt because of a mysterious bounty hunter named falco sang who has been hired to murder him. dass survives the encounter, but falco has taken the girl to use as bait for a trap. that is where this book opens. ember tied to a post with an android pointing a gun at her from a distance and falco set up close to get a clean kill shot at dass and as he later says “i’ve never seen a jedi die. i wanted to watch”.
and while all of this is happening, the crew of the uhumele, like falco sang, have been trying to track down their jedi friend by tracing clues to his whereabouts. while doing so, they have inadvertently put a 3rd party looking to wipe out all jedi on his trail. DARTH VADER.
wheatley’s flawlessly gorgeous pencils beautifully detail stradley’s fast paced, chase tale. in this 5th installment, the arc is wraped up nicely with a bow.
dark times is the best star wars comic i’ve ever read. the nostalgia of characters being on the run from the empire reminds me of the magic of the original trilogy when things were so uncertain and exciting.
if you love star wars but aren’t fond of most star wars comics like me, give dark times a try. you might be glad you did.
