I only read the first couple Spidey Sunday strips before I dropped off of ASM.  I enjoyed them thoroughly, however, so I was pretty excited to see that Marvel decided to collect them in this one-shot.  Overall, this one-shot is a ton of fun, and should be read by any and all Spidey fans.  This is Stan Lee at his silver age best.  In this story, he’s just having fun, pulling out wacky plot twist after wacky plot twist.  It’s comic book jazz.  It’s also a ton of fun.  I was smiling the whole time reading this book.  This doesn’t contain any important changes to the status quo nor does it really fit into any sort of continuity.  But it’s goofy and entertaining with a lot of heart behind it.  Stan Lee certainly doesn’t take himself seriously here, and it’s nice to see him just cut loose with his story.  It’s fun to see him not shy away from poking fun at some of the more zany aspects of Spider-Man’s story, both in the Sunday strips and the backup material.

Reading through this book, I’m stunned at just what an amazing talent Martin is.  I’ve been a long time fan of his work, but each two page story is teeming with detail.  Martin challenges the bounds of what is possible with comic book paneling and story telling, and his composition is amazing.  I was never lost with the visuals, and it’s amazing the way the words and pictures just flow naturally for the reader, even in the cases when they jump all over the image.  This is comic book drawing at its most pure and exciting.  I feel like the fact that all of these two page stories are collected here only adds to the skill present on these pages as each pair of pages builds from the previous one.  This book is absolutely gorgeous.
