So we waited through numerous delays for this comic and then, when it arrived, it was gone again in the blink of an eye. Was it worth it? That feels like something of a tough call. When I heard of it I expected something between Alias and the team's previous work on Daredevil, and in that respect it didn't really click. For one I never got the sense of character exploration that we got with Jessica Jones. Where that book was all about Jessica, her life and her interaction with other people and the larger Marvel U, we never got that kind of depth and richness here. The Daredevil run was a slowburn but with a sense of the bigger picture and, again, this new title never had that kind of scope.
What we have is essentially a mini series about the hunt for a skrull. It's quite well done in that respect, especially in this final issue. With number 7 Bendis kind of takes his foot off the accelerator and lets Jessica do her spy/detective thing, particularly in the scene when she interviews the skrull's girlfriend. This is the Bendis we love, with that natural rhythm and flow of dialogue. The downside is that it makes me realise what we've been missing. The first six issues have been a kind of relentless chase, running from showdown to showdown with so little character development in between. We could have done with more moments like the ones between Jessica and Carol Danvers at the end of this story.
The art for the most part is amazing. The look of Madripoor is dingy and dripping with atmosphere. For some reason I am reminded of the likes of the LA of Blade Runner and I think I'd love to see Maleev let loose on a real hard sci-fi story. His Jessica is gorgeous and while he apparently grew tired of drawing her, you really wouldn't know it. It's a shame then that the Avengers show up and demonstrate the weakness Maleev has when it comes to proper superheroes. The double page spread doesn't work, but it could just be that he's gonna have to stick to his strengths of more street level stories.
So in the end it's an interesting project with lots to like. This final issue felt like something like what I was hoping for all along and does at least leave me optimistic for the creator owned project, Scarlet, that Bendis teases in the afterword.
Art: 4 - Very Good
I liked this book, I also liked Doctor Voodoo and S.W.O.R.D., I think I may be the kiss of death (L).
The one common problem all these failed launches share IMO is a mismatch with story and art.
IMO this book needed an artist with a grip on capes and tights as well as dark and gritty. Since Marvel lost Finch I am not sure who would have been best suited. I only know a guy like Maleev who is better in his head than anywhere on paper can go the hell away from comics.
Jessica Drew deserves a monthly and better than this half hearted attempt.
Marvel needs to start putting more effort into these launches.
@CaptainSweatpants: Alex Maleev is one of the best artists in comics. He’s probably in the top 20. I bought the book for the art, dropped it because the story.
It’s over already? I thought it was an ongoing?
