After months of intense mystery surrounding Jim Downing and his past life, we finally catch up to the rest of Spawn’s cast, and I was not disappointed. Jim Downing doesn’t even appear in this issue, and it worked very well. For the most part, the format of this issue devotes 3 or 4 pages to each character, showing the reader what they’ve been up to, and their current state of affairs. I have grown to care about these characters, new and old, and have always read Spawn more for the “world” than for the character, so I was pleased with this issue. Seeing Sara again, was a very welcomed site. She has always been an interesting character, and it looks like she will be getting more screen time in the coming months. I really liked the format of the book. It read well and kept me interested. It is also a great issue for a new reader, as it provides some background information, all the while moving the story forward.

The artwork in this issue was excellent. The layouts were good. The content looked good and all seemed relevant. The way the story unfolded in the panels was smooth. The last few pages were especially well-done and pushed this comic into a 5 for me. Kudranski’s style can be hard to explain. At times he will use the same basic panel multiple times and only change a few things so as to give a “cinematic” feel, while other times he gives page layouts that are designed as whole pages with lots of smaller drawings of single items, with a few normal panels to tell the story. It is very moody art and I like it. He still has the “traced” realist look, but it is executed well here and has never postponed an issue.

This was a very entertaining issue and sets the stage for things to come. It has an awesome cover, and is my pick of the week.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
