JMS is a hot writer right now, and sometimes not in the best of ways. He has done some of the best stuff for entertainment, notably creating Babylon 5. Since joining the comic world he has done very good work like Thor and The Twelve. But has done some of the worst stuff I’ve ever seen like Bullet Points and his entire run on Amazing Spider-Man (he’s one of the big reasons for the One More Day debacle.)

But this might be one of my favorite stories on a lot of levels. For one, JMS knows how to write Surfer. This is a hard thing to do, cause frankly I’ve never really cared for the guy. Sure he’s forced to be Galactus’s herald, but since he’s as calm as an Osmond twin it’s hard to care for him. This story, however, gives us a deep look into a creature that is dying. We care deeply for the guy and seen his turmoil within the month he has left is quite poetic. There is some great meetings with Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four here. Plus when we get to the final, and much depressing, final act of the story; it’s a very hard wrenching moment to read.

Ribic is a name I am do not recognize, but if you ask me; it’s another name for Alex Ross. These are just beautiful work of art, from the backgrounds to the facial movements of the characters. They look real, and I think that is important considering we need to care deeply for all involved here.

Again, this might be one of the best stories put out by Marvel in a long time. It’s also the start, in my opinion anyways, that made the cosmic side of Marvel much more important. Even if you dont care for the Surfer (heck I didnt coming in to this) that is no excuse for you not to get this title. It’s a moving peice of artwork that will just make you remember why these characters are important in general. In short; this is one of the must have books PERIOD. Now it’s in a cheaper TPB version and I want all of you to pick it up (if you already havent). Don’t ignore this in your comic shop, pick it up; it’s well worth your time.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I was always interested by this title, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.  Let’s face it:  I’m sold.
