There’s two things I’ve said in the previous week:

1) I think, until I read RASL, everything else by Jeff Smith is really good.

2) I have a weird fixiation with the Marvel family.

The Comic God’s have now granted me of mixing the two ideas together by giving me Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil. Now I know this series isnt well beloved by most fans, I even heard people say that even if RASL release dates are long; at the least the story is better then this comic. I dont believe that for one second.

For one, I think this is a great way to start the origin of Billy Batsion and Captain Marvel for today’s audience. I mean for the first two chapters it’s basically a retelling of the Marvel family. We got Billy, Mary, the magician Shazam, and all of the other castmates that would be apart of the original series. We get a great story with an updated Dr. Savina and Mister Mind….basically I think if anything else this could be a great start for little kids. It’s not too complicated to get into and the designs of the characters are cartoony enough to keep the kids interested as well.

Speaking of character designs, maybe it’s because I havent been spoiled by Jeff Smith with coloring but damn this is a good looking comic. The creature designs are enough for the price of admission and I just love the Bruce Timm-like design for Captain Marvel. The colors are what really set this book apart. Wildly colorful and imaginitve, this feels like a Saturday morning cartoon.

So maybe my bias of Captain Marvel is showing, but I loved this story. Jeff Smith did a great job rebooting the Marvel mythos and made this a visual treat for anyone. I know there is a new kids comic for Captain Marvel out right now; but I would’ve loved to see this series branch out into it’s own series. I really think it’s that good.
