I went to a Secret Six buying binge on Wednesday.  I bought this trade and then almost every issue I needed to get caught up except for the very most current which they were sold out of for some reason. The regular users of this site have been raving about Secret Six and Deadpool for sometime now, it was only a matter of time before I had to see what Secret Six was getting such high marks about because I’m so much more of a DC person.  Sorry, Deadpool.  Maybe in another life I would pick you instead.

Going into this, I had the same problem as the other recent review.  The references to past stories I haven’t read were a plenty in the first chapter.  I can handle it if I made it through Green Lantern: Rebirth without being a regular GL reader.  Shit, even Detective was making references to 52 (which I haven’t tried yet) and I didn’t let that bother me too much.  Sometimes you just don’t feel like checking Wikipedia after reading every other page and you just want to get to the good stuff.  Have already read the other review, I forced myself to the middle where continuity wasn’t too heavy and things did get more enjoyable eventually.

I have no idea how Ragdoll is.  I have no idea who Scandal Savage is.  I have no idea who the rich lady who owned the casino is either.  I can’t even remember her name.  I was somewhat familiar with Deadshot, Bane, and Catman.  Bane I obviously knew from Batman in the early 1990s.  I was first introduced to Catman in an arc of Legends Of The Dark Knight called Heat.  I also remember seeing him in an issue of Detective from the late 1980s also.  I’m not sure if it is the same guy or not.  Wasn’t the Catman in Heat a serial killer who Batman and Catwoman teamed up together to take down before?  I don’t know.  I couldn’t tell you where I remember Deadshot from either.  Wasn’t he in the beginning of Batman: Cacophony or was that somebody else?  Who knows? Who cares?

Things actually got really interesting when the true nature of the card is revealed.  I thought this was a very cool plot device.  They could’ve done more with it though.

I thought Tarantula Girl was kind of hot too.

Overall, I give it three stars.  Maybe I would’ve liked it more if I had already been more familiar with the Villians United mini-series and had more experience with these characters, but I don’t.

  1. Villians United is really the place to start with the Secret Six,

after you see what they do and go through it sets the tone for the way things are.

The Six mini was okay and there is a Birds of Prey arc called "Dead of winter" (I think)

collected in trade that is worth reading but Villians United is the Origin and is a must read.

The B.O.P. arc shows the Huntress and Catman’s relationship bloom and the mini has

the Mad Hatter on the team for most of the book and Vandal Savage makes Scandal have

daddy issues as the teams battles the immortal one.  The current on going is for the fans who

read Villains United and wanted more and could not get enough, NOT for everybody but still if

people who do not even know anything about the history can find some parts interesting that shows

how great the book is to those who have read  everthing and cant wait till next month.

Good review Robby I would/will read more from you when I see them posted up like a mailbox.
