There once was a magical time in America’s history, it was the 1960’s. Of course it was a magical time for a bunch of different reasons (insert pot joke here) but what made it so magicial that a character called Black Panther was created. This was an era where every single Marvel character introduced was at least tried to go up in the ranks of importance. Thank about this: Black Panther was part of the real fucking Avengers at some point. That’s like saying Ghost Rider could be an Avenger now. That was practically the high point for the character, as he’s been in obscurity for the last 3 decades.

Enter the mythical god of Jason Aaron, who many seem to see a Halo and shiny bright light whenever he is mentioned, and he not only brings the character in top form….but he also gives much interesting possibilites to the character.

A looong way back I made one of his Secret Invasion tie-in issues my POTW. It was a scary time where I wasnt the hateful troll that I am today and that all the praise in the world wouldnt budge me at all. But because people we’re all over Aaron from day one well I just had to see what the hub-bub was about and a scary thing happened: I had fun….Yes it’s a strange and confusing feeling I get but this tie-in arc was a lot of fun. Jason Aaron did to Black Panther what no one else (not eve Stan ‘the Man’ Lee) could do the character in so many years. This is basically a ‘300’ knock-off for the plot but I loved this idea of a utopia society basically going native when their technology goes bust. Here’s when you know the writing is A+ here: Remember we were all complaining how the Skrulls barely had a personallity? Well Jason Aaron gives us personality in almost all the Skrulls in this arc. Making us feel actually bad what happens to the bastards towards the end of this.

There are a few problems with this, like the art is kinda wishy washy; and I swear I lost some of my vision trying to read the lettering in this….But overall I had fun. It’s one of the few things about Secret Invasion that was actually good. Although considering it’s coming from such a D list title it makes you think why you couldnt get this type of fun in the actual story of SI. I would recommend this trade in a heartbeat because you get justice to a character that was introduced to be a big figure to begin with.

It’s just nice to know Hudlin took this title over…..and basically….ruined….everything Aaron did in 3 issues…….God I hate Marvel sometimes.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
