I’m a week late with this one.  I know, I know.  The short version of the story is that my shop didn’t get this issue last week because of a shipping issue, and the long version is, well, pretty much the short version.  I haven’t sat down to read the 22 other reviews that are out there for this issue, but I feel the need to write my own, even though most of us have moved on from this issue.  I avoided reading too much about it last week (and I haven’t even listened to the show yet), so I came at this issue with a fresh perspective.  Over the past few months, I’ve been really down on the series because it wasn’t quite living up to my expectations or the pacing was off or whatever.  But with this issue, I actually found myself enjoying the issue.

It’s not that the issue is filled with fist pump moments, although there are some cool moments where people are reunited and the heroes win.  That’s all fine and good.  It’s the story that surrounds the beginning of Dark Reign that grabbed me.  It’s probably most likely because I thought Dark Reign was going to be about the Skrull’s reign on Earth after defeating the heroes, but Bendis took me through a loop and made it something completely different.  This may not have surprised people that spend their days reading the Internet, but for someone who’s out of touch like I am (and really doesn’t care too much about many Marvel books), it was an excellent surprise.  It was one of those moments where I took notice and loudly proclaimed, “Oh! Oh, wow!” like a little school girl.  Where I thought I would find myself uninterested in Dark Reign completely, I find myself a little bit more interested in where its going, and I’m looking forward to a majority of the books that will be tied into this (or at least listening to people tell me about them).

This isn’t an ending to one of the greatest events out there, but it’s an ending that I didn’t expect, and so I found to be all the more satisfying.  I think that this will lead the Marvel U in an interesting direction, and I hope that Marvel takes the time to let it play out.  Here’s hoping.
