I’ll cut this series some slack because this isn’t really meant to be ingested in seven slices.  The whole pie at once, though, would probably be more satisfying.  Sure, you could say that it’s Bendis’s job to make sure that each issue holds up on its own merits, but, let’s face it, the market demands that it be published in pieces before the collection is released.  Read the whole thing in one sitting (which would probably take ten minutes) and it’s probably going to be a lot tastier.

There’s really not much here except fighting and that’s not particularly compelling.  The fault lies in Yu’s art. It’s page after page of bodies jammed together.  Like a poorly filmed action sequence in a movie, it simply bores the audience.  A good action sequence needs choreography and visual flair; this has neither.

Overall, I wouldn’t say Secret Invasion #7 was disappointingor underwhelming, just… whelming.  Yeah, whelming is about right.

  1. If it’s only going to take me 10 minutes to read a big event book….I’d be pissed

At least with the first 4 issues of Final Crisis, it’ll take like an hour to understand everything. 🙂

  2. I agree completely about Yu’s art. It was too dense, too confusing, and too indistinct to successfully advance the story. Technically, there were some nice elements, but the analogy to poorly directed action sequences is dead on.
