The idea of a stealth team of Avengers has a lot of potential. The Avengers have many street level characters who could get a chance to shine in such a concept, and the idea opens the door to incorporating elements of espionage and noir in the stories. Nick Spencer is just not executing in this volume of “Secret Avengers,” though. In truth, this story occasionally slides into the downright goofy. “Suicide Scientists?” I would think that such a concept would make it pretty tough for A.I.M. to recruit. It would appear that arms expos are taking place in the Marvel universe all the time, and that they are pretty dangerous places to be. In this issue, Daisy Johnson and Nick Fury, Jr. get into a fracas with some A.I.M. agents at an arms convention. If I remember correctly, Captain America and Iron Man were attacked last year at an armaments expo by Kashmir Vennema in the short lived Captain America team-up book. The whole idea that the Avengers need to have their memories wiped after missions strikes me as a silly gimmick. All of the Avengers have saved the world many times. Does S.H.I.E.L.D. actually consider the Avengers to be so untrustworthy and dishonorable that they cannot be allowed to remember their actions on missions? Three issues into this reboot, we still don’t know why some missions are so sensitive and secret that participants must have their minds wiped after the fact.
Luke Ross’ art in this issue looks terrific. There’s a great deal of detail in many panels, and the characters are expressive. Daisy Johnson and Maria Hill are brunettes with dark hair, but Ross makes them look distinct. Ross deserves better scripts to interpret than the one he has in this issue.
Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 4 - Very Good

Read the first issue of this, and was reminded why I quit reading Marvel. Hope this guy had better luck with the Ultimates.
Yeah, i quit after number 1 as well. As a concept, I just can’t get behind it. I don’t care how cool everything else might be, if the heroes are basically being mind controlled into missions and then mind-wiped, then there is nothing heroic being accomplished. I can’t think of a way for the stories to “matter” less.
Pass.
