I won’t judge you if you think I’m off my meds*. I’m about a year and a half behind on all Spider-Man books. I had no idea what the premise of The Scarlet Spider was, and I’ve shelved each of the first two issues without bothering to even flip through it. But I decided to pick up issue three tonight completely cold.

I liked it. The idea of the spider clones has never appealed to me but, if memory serves, I liked when Kaine popped back into continuity, if for no other reason than I remember him reappearing in an issue that involved the Duck Tours in Boston. My main problem with clone stories is that the whole “which is the real person and which is the clone” is way played out. So I like that this story plops Kaine down in an entirely different part of the country, and doesn’t appear, based on this issue, to have anything to do with Spider-Man, other than that Kaine is wearing a Spider suit. In Houston.

I’ve only been to Houston a few times, but I loved the “I ran out of skyscrapers” gag. And there were a few other moments in this that will have me headed back to the shelves to pick up the first two issues.

*-I’ve never been on any meds. Maybe that’s the problem.

  1. Good review. Didn’t read the first two issues either. Now I kind of want to give it a try.

  2. Both of you should read the first two. It’s beautiful (stegman) and what really appeals to me is that it’s in no hurry to be an ASM clone… Pun sort of intended. Hope you have fun with it! I sure am.

    • lol, spot on mate. I like all the “it’s not ASM” jokes like there being no skyscrapers and Houstons got no superheroes.
