I think I owe Jason Aaron an apology.  Or maybe it’s Davide Furno.  Heck, maybe it’s just to everyone who had to read my whiny ass review last issue.  You see, I must have been cross eyed when I read the last issue or maybe it was because my blood sugar was low.  I don’t remember, or maybe, I’m just too embarassed to really think about it too much.  The source of my shame comes from my undying love of this issue.

Scalped is definitely one of my top books out right now.  This issue, though, shows off brilliantly what makes this book work.  The story is completely heart wrenching as we are, again, taken through Bad Horse’s day.  He’s still suffering from the fallout of the “Dead Mothers” storyline, and needless to say, he’s not doing well.  It doesn’t help that the killer is a fellow F.B.I. man who taunts him during an interrogation.  Nor does it help that the aunt of the little boy comes around looking for someone to blame.  He’s just up to his neck in a pile of shit, and it seems, for now, Aaron is more than happy to let him sit there.

And let’s not forget the story of Carol.  In this issue, we find out what happened to her baby and it’s father. We see her heartbreak and her spiral downward.  We finally understand the addiction and whoring and self-loathing she holds.  And it’s amazing.  Not in that voyeuristic love of watching characters fall, but from a writing perspective, her story is nothing short of inspired.  Coupled with Bad Horse’s current state, and we can begin to see just how awful of a place they’re in.

In the last issue, I wasn’t a big fan of Furno’s art, but for some reason, it worked for me this issue.  In looking at his art, his characters feel less sketchy and don’t feature so many shadowing lines in them.  With it cleaned up a bit, his art really fits the mood of the story.  His close ups of the characters are AMAZING, and there’s a few panels where there are just eyes that speak to you.  Looking into them, you can see the hurt.  It takes some amazing penciling to convey that with just eyes.  There were a few panels that I wasn’t a fan of, but in general, I thought it was much improved over last issue.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Nice review Neb. I just posted mine and then read yours. Teachers think alike ha.

  2. I agree about the art, last issue it seemed kinda unfinished, but this issue was awesome, & like you said, fits the tone of this book perfectly.

I feel like I say it about every new issue … but how is it possible for this book to be so damn good every single issue??
