I have tried, on several occasions, to invest myself in Savage Dragon.  Until recently, I was told that I was trying out the series when it was not at its best.  When Larsen was busy being top co…er top person at Image, he wasn’t able to focus as much on the series that so obviously loves to make.  I accepted that.

I’ve been told by several people whose opinions I respect that now is a great time to jump in.  That Larsen has time and love to spare for the fin-headed one, and that it’s been great to read.

I guess it’s not for me.  This story reads like a comic written by a very talented high school or young college aged writer.  It’s kind of funny but aspires to be more.  The characters speak in a very silver-agey “gee-wizz, golly shuckins, Mr. Dragon!” sort of way that just has no appeal to me.  And the villains declare why they are doing their dastardly deeds while they do them, just so you know their motivations.

I suspect lovers of silver age comics who really want new stories and new characters to read about, but who don’t want to be challenged by more complex storylines, or realistic dialogue will love this story.  And that’s ok.  I’m glad it’s out there for them.  But, personally, I’ll be sterring clear of this title from now on.  It’s just not for me.
