I’ve cracked the code to Satellite Sam!

Bare with me here – everything will tie together in the end….

In the latest issue of Grant Morrison’s Batman Inc, his grand seven year Bat Saga came to an end. And in that issue Bruce Wayne speaks the following words, “Batman will never DIE!” This is entirely true – the character of Batman WILL never die, he has been living for more then 70 years and will continue to live for another 70 and beyond. Batman and the rest of the well known superheroes will outlive us all – much like the cave drawings of our neanderthal ancestors, our superheroes will last years and be discovered by countless generations. They are our modern day gods and comic books are the vessel in which the stories are imparted to the masses.

These gods will never die.

Oh but they do die don’t they? Superman died at the hands of Doomsday. Spider-Man met his maker thanks to Doc Ock. Batman departed this world after being blasted by Darksied’s Omega Sanction eye beams. But the thing is, Clark Kent died. Peter Parker died. Bruce Wayne died, not Batman. Batman lived on thanks to Dick Grayson. Grayson took up the cowl and stepped into his mentors shoes so that Batman could live on. There will always be a Batman – no matter who in behind the mask.

And that is what Satellite Sam is about.

In the latest issue the character of Clint Hargood speaks the following words, “Satellite Sam will never DIE!” hmmm, where have I heard that phrase before?

Let’s get you caught up shall we? In issue one Carlyle White plays the character Satellite Sam on a Sci-Fi television show. He is murdered and the mystery of who done it is one of the things that drives this comic along and is making for a very Film Noir experience. But the show must go on and the producers of the show demand that Carlyle’s son Mike take the space helmet and become Satellite Sam! It works and Mike saved the day and the show went off without a hitch. But Mike really has no desire to become what his father was, and after finding a stash of pornographic photos, some of women he works with, Mike is even more determined to get to the bottom of his fathers murder and not follow in his footsteps. But there are people behind the scenes that will not let Satellite Sam go quietly into cancellation, oh no, they will do what it takes to insure that this character does indeed live forever.

So the key to cracking the code is this:
Imagine that….
Carlyle White is Bruce Wayne.
Mike White is Damian Wayne
Dr. Joseph Ginsberg is Ra’s al Ghul
Kara Kelly is Talia al Ghul
Hamiton Stanhope is
Clint Haygood is Dick Grayson
Marinagela Melato is Selina Kyle
Dick Danning is Commissioner Gordon
Guy Roth is Vicky Vale
Eugene Ford in Lucas Fox
Libby Meyers is Barbara Gordon

Now read the first two issues of Satellite Sam again and see if it doesn’t take on a whole new feel. Pretty cool yeah?

Certainly is a different take on the book, thanks for sharing, well written.

  2. I don’t know if I entirely agree with the extended Batman metaphor but that is a really good theory and it also made me think about the executives keep pushing everybody to stick around because Satellite Sam is what “keeps the lights on” or how his dad was thinking of taking the show to California for more freedom and ends up getting killed because of it.

    • Hey yeah, maybe those executives are DC Comics and they HAVE to keep Batman alive! It works man! Thanks for helping me out with my Code Cracking! =)

all fun cracking aside, I do enjoy what Fraction and Chaykin are delivering here – a very well thought out murder mystery / smokey jazz club film noir / period piece. While this issue wasn’t as good as the first, and I felt gave in too much to Chaykins penchant for lewdness, it still blew away most other comics I read this week (except Trillium)

    • Yeah I don’t know if it has totally picked up with me yet but it is a really cool style so far. I do really think you are on to something with your theory and I’m going to reading it with that in mind going forward.
