I’ve never read an issue of Spawn.  Never picked up any of Bendis’s Sam And Twitch run, but I thought the cover and concept of issue one looked, cool, and I read odare’s review (https://ifanboy.com/reviews/odare77/image_comics/sam_*_twitch_writer/1_(of_4)). and decided to give it a look.

I loved it.  Apart from the questionable use of white text in a comic that takes place during a deep freeze, everything about this comic appeals to me.  A series of murders where the victims seem to be little more than notebooks for the killer to write on.  These murders just being the last step from someone who’s used public spaces and dead pets to get his book started.

This is a solid, well-written murder mystery which, it seems likely, will soon become supernatural.  For now, I’m enjoying it as a simple street crime story.  If it goes all demony, I’ll still follow it to the end, as it’s only a four issue series.  The entire creative team of Blengino, Erbetta, Bono (no, not the tool from U2), and Rizzu work flawlessly together (discounting that white text issue), and I imagine this will make an incredible trade paperback.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Do you need to pick up #1 to enjoy #2?  Or, can you pick the story up in the second act, so to speak?

  2. I would defnitely pick up issue 1 first.  There are some bits that I imagine would be confusing without the context of issue one.
