The eighth issue of this series really got the ball rolling for me. This has been a great series, no doubt, but it wasn’t gelling with me for some reason. I think what set me off was that the eighth issue finally turned into something more than a ‘Romeo & Juliet meets Star Wars’ angle for me. Brian K. Vaughan is doing one hell of a job with the characters here and setting up with this universe. So why didn’t this love continue for me this week?

One of the things that might have hampered this for me was going back to ‘The Will’. He hasn’t been shown really that much since the infamous ‘Sextillion’ issue so I kinda forgot about him to be honest. Even with adding Marko’s ex into the mix with Gwendolyn the fun kinda dipped a bit here for me. A lot of it was explaining the plot again and just why we’re suppose to be following The Will in the first place. There’s not a lot here to really make me care for Gwendolyn right now either other than she’s a pissed of ex-fiancee. There is a lot of wacky, sci-fi premises here though so that certainly helps.

Of course nothing will ever diminish my love for Fiona Staples art. As I stated before she always seems to draw the right amount of lines to convey emotion in each panel. Twice she draws some very realistic angles of a face rolling their eyes in annoyance. She has to have some sort of models to help her out because this is just too lifelike to not use any. She also colors her own work which is a bit surprising considering she’s able to do this at a monthly pace. I absolutely loved the blues and purples she used early on to indicated an early morning on one planet. The last thing I have no mention is that I don’t know if I ever want to see a man’s face be eaten ever again. Even with a gross image like that Staples somehow makes it beautiful.

I know it’s silly but the change in characters kinda hurt this issue for me. This was a fun issue like all the others but it didn’t have that ‘wow’ factor I felt last month. This is still one of the more unique and most beautiful comics you’ll read right now so don’t let this ‘meh’ of a review sway you. I’m sure ‘The Will’ and Gwendolyn will bring me back around in a few issues.
